Dubstep

So yeah, dubstep. Thing's blowing up. I like it, but can only take so much. I feel it is one of those sub genres that are limited by what it is (like most electronic sub genres...and reggae). Regardless, the drops bring the hype. When that wobble bass comes in and the shit drops it's like a heavy metal breakdown put through an electronic filter. It is pretty awesome. It's easy to see why dubstep is blowing up.

One of my favorite dubstep songs and drops:

The only thing I don't like about dubstep and most electronic music is the scene. I'm a dive bar guy. A hip hop/rock concert guy. I want to enjoy great music with other people. The whole electronic scene is sort of different. Biggest thing? The drugs. I'm not saying there aren't drugs being used at other genre's concerts, but electronic/dnb/jungle/house/techno/dubstep is just about founded on taking ecstasy. When a crowd thinks the music is inherent in the drug and that the two are mutually exclusive, you get some silly shit. I'm not an "upper" guy so I don't mess with cocaine/ecstasy/molly/etc. because I hate the stimulated UP feeling you have as well as the crash. So me being sober amongst a bunch of white kids wearing pink head bands and tight jeans sweating their ass off do not go together.

Great chill, dubstep song:

  3. I really enjoyed the first song. Can't believe Skrillex got his new album he was working on stolen. Anyways, good selection.

  4. I love a bit of dubstep, but I agree with you about the culture behind electronic music, its just not my scene either.

  5. Dude, I totally get what you're saying. I looooooove dubstep, but the live scene is crazy. I like the energy though. Skrilly is a beast. :D

  8. I don't know what to think about dubstep really. The only dubstep I listen to is the gentler stuff with vocals too (Chase & Status etc), yet this apparently isn't "real" dubstep (Borgore/Chasing Shadows). To me, real dubstep just sounds like a mess though :/

  9. I feel the same way about Dubstep, i like it, but can really only take a few listens at a time before it gets redundant. I also agree with you on the scene for it. Good post, great songs.

  15. I agree, there's only so much you can do with dubstep. I'm new to the electronic scene, going to my first few shows in the coming weeks, and I'll agree a lot of it has to do with ecstasy and other drugs and stuff. Coming from someone who was strictly rock and went to dozens of shows every year, it'll be interesting to say the least.

  22. I can only hope that the increased interest in dubstep will bring foreword some great innovators but no matter what I think its a safe bet that we will be seeing some dubstep car commercials soon.

  23. Skrillex is damn good, but Rusko and DatsiK will always be my favorite. Invincible ignorance? I don't even care if it is! :)

  24. You nailed those comments on the drug scene. I'm a big punk guy myself, and I enjoy it so much because the basement-show scene is just so welcoming.

  25. For me personally, I think I've had all I can take of the aggressively abrasive "bro-step" style of dubstep that seems to be hot with the kiddies lately. There's nothing to counter balance the bass, no melody, nor is there any variation in the drum patterns or sounds.

I MC sometimes at local EDM events, but I just can't take most dubstep seriously anymore. I think its moved too far away from it's roots to be interesting anymore. Jungle, ragga, electronic dub, 2step, UK garage, grime, and trip hop formed the foundation for dubstep. When I used to go see dubstep DJs spin, their sets were filled with rich sub bass, dubbed out riddims, break beats, THEN mixed in with the more filthier bass lines popular now. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that's just my two cents.

  28. Personally I'm more of a fan of DnB than dubstep but I always take composition and melody over just repetitive beats. Lovin' the layout of the blog. Woke me up this morning.
